Your First Tent Camping Trip – Planning Considerations

Embarking on your first camping adventure can be both exhilarating and daunting. Whether you’re craving a digital detox or simply yearning for a weekend getaway immersed in nature, camping offers an unparalleled experience of connection with the outdoors. We understand that it can be challenging to think through all the steps and considerations when you are first starting out. So, if you are planning a 1- or 2-day tent camping trip (where your vehicle is nearby), here are some essential considerations to ensure your journey is as smooth and enjoyable as possible.

Choosing the Right Campground or Campsite

Selecting the perfect campsite is crucial for a successful camping experience. Consider factors such as proximity to amenities such as access to running water and electricity or latrines (if you prefer some comforts), level of seclusion, terrain, and nearby attractions. Many national and state parks offer designated campsites with facilities like bathrooms, fire pits, and picnic tables, which can be ideal for beginners. Reserve your campsite in advance, especially during peak seasons!

Food and Meal Planning

Plan your meals in advance and consider factors like cooking equipment and ease of preparation. If you plan to cook over an open fire, confirm that your chosen campsite allows campfires and opt for simple recipes that require minimal ingredients and prep time. Examples: Sweet potatoes and pre-cooked brats or chicken sausages can be wrapped in tin foil and cooked directly in the coals of the campfire for dinner.  Quick cooking oatmeal with peanut butter or protein powder is an easy, nutritious breakfast that only requires one pot for boiling water! And lunch can be as simple as pre-made sandwiches and fruit.  When car camping, you should have room for a cooler, so you will not need to worry about perishability or weight, so load it up with your favorites!  When in doubt, pack more food than you think you’ll need, and don’t forget to bring snacks for energy boosts throughout the day.

Gear Essentials

Investing in quality camping gear, such as a tent, sleeping bag/pad, camp chairs, cooking supplies, lighting, and day bags can significantly enhance your comfort and enjoyment. Download our checklist of Camping Essentials here.

Always check and dress appropriately for the weather, bringing layers that you can easily add or remove as temperatures often fluctuate. Also be prepared for unexpected showers with waterproof jackets and a change of shoes. Speaking of shoes, comfortable, closed-toe shoes or hiking boots are essential for exploring the area, while bringing a pair of camp slippers or sandals is a great idea for an evening around the campfire.  Pack sunscreen, sunglasses, and/or hats to protect your skin and don’t forget other personal essentials like toiletries, medications, hand sanitizer, etc.

Safety Considerations

Prioritize safety during your camping trip.  Always bring a basic medical kit with you, even when car camping in the front country – Aspirin and Benadryl can save a life and are easy to keep on hand. Familiarize yourself with local wildlife and take precautions to avoid encounters and remember to always follow principles of Leave No Trace ethics to minimize your environmental impact. Finally, always inform someone of your itinerary and location in case of emergency.

Enjoy the Experience

Your first tent or car camping trip is a journey of discovery and adventure. By considering these essential aspects beforehand, you can ensure a memorable and enjoyable experience in the great outdoors.
